How not to write a novel part 4 – Cheating on your novel

14, March,2007

I have made what I think is a cardinal error. I have started cheating on my novel.

I am messing around with a new story.

I know this is wrong but I just couldn’t help it. It was all that mundane editing, it was just dragging me down. The new story is so full of possibilities. I don’t know, maybe I’ve just outgrown my old story. We’ve been together for 10 years and I’m beginning to think we’ll never hear the pitter patter of tiny publisher’s feet.

Still, 10 years is along time. I suppose I owe it to both of us to finish what I started. Maybe I just need to relax and concentrate on doing the fun bits for a while; get back to the things that made the writing fun – there’s always room for one more body odour joke.
